The Police Department continued to progress over the years with the retirement of Chief Nobles in 1954, and the subsequent hiring of Ray Eldred in the same year. Eldred held the position of Chief from 1954 to 1974, amassing a career second only to Ray Nobles. In an article from a local newspaper Eldred stated "in 1940 he got $1,570 a year, which when he retired in 1974 he was earning $11,000 a year". The number of hours an officer worked also dropped considerably during this time.
Following the term
of Chief Ray Eldred, Richard Verstreate was appointed as new Chief of
Sayre
Borough. Chief Verstreate served from 1975 to 1985, a term of ten years.
At the close of his ten-year term Chief Verstreate turned the reins over
to John Carlson. Carlson served the Sayre Police Department as Chief for
three years, from 1985 to 1988. During the term of Chief Carlson the Sayre
Police Department was subject to a senseless act of arson that destroyed
the police department office and a portion of the Sayre Borough Hall. On
Labor Day 1987 an individual or individuals put an object through the window
of the Police Department setting fire to the office and the Borough Hall.
The fire destroyed the office and placed the Police Department in a make
shift office for a time while the office was rebuilt. To this day the arson
remains an unsolved case.
